Lori Wood, R.N., BSN

After graduating from Stafford High School, I attended Hutchinson Community College for1 year and transferred to Fort Hays State University, Hays KS to complete my BSN.  I graduated in May 1982.

After graduation, I worked at the Wakeeney District Hospital in Wakeeney, KS as a graduate nurse for a semester.  I worked 12 hour days and did a little of everything- Floor duty, ER, Labor/Delivery.  One of the doctors on staff took me under his wing and taught me many things in preparation for taking my nursing state boards.

I passed my state boards and my husband and I moved back to his hometown in Trousdale, KS after finishing college.  I worked at the St. John District Hospital in St. John, KS for 5 years.  I was head nurse for the night shift (11-7), doing floor duty, ER work, assisting in delivering babies, and whatever else was generally needed.  ER work was very stressful; our shift had something happen almost every night. The nurse aids on my shift would watch the patients and answer the phone while I was in ER.  I found it a true challenge to be several places at once when I was the only RN on duty.  This was a great way to develop organizational skills and patience.

When my children were born, I took a leave of absence from nursing from 1987-1992.  As time passed and they both started school, I felt I needed to get back in the work place.  I decided that I wanted a job that would allow me to be a mother & wife with a fairly regular schedule and at the same time continue helping people and practice my nursing skills.  I knew that hospital nursing would not fit that route.   That is when a friend of mine talked to me about Public Health Nursing.

I began working at the Edwards County Health Dept. in 1992. This will be my 10th year of working in Public Health.  I have learned so much about a whole other aspect of nursing care.  Public Health is a great way for nurses to educate people about  health issues and hopefully having them adopt and apply this education to  prevent  disease or health problems later on.

The programs that I work with in Public Health include:

  •           WIC

  •           HIV Prevention and Testing Counselor

  •           Infant, Children and Adult Immunizations

  •           Diabetes Education

  •           Child Health – CHANP certified

  •           DASE speech screenings, Blood Lead screenings, Hemoglobin and UA

  •           Family Planning and Women’s Health program

Why is Public Health Important to you?

"Public Health provides an excellent opportunity to deal with the people.  That is what I went into nursing for in the first place- to be involved with people.  I have always enjoyed getting to know others, and trying to help with whatever health problem they may be having.  Public Health allows many opportunities to provide preventative care to the community and gives many learning experiences to nurses in return. There are so many different things to do in public health and it seems there are no dull moments with the variety of things we do each day."......... Lori
